Daniel Owen

Daniel Owen (1889-1919), also known as Danny Whizz-Bang, was a member of the Peaky Blinders gang who was murdered by Billy Kimber in 1919.

Biography[]

Daniel Owen was born in Birmingham, England in 1889, and he grew up in the Small Heath neighborhood alongside the Shelby family. He served alongside Tommy Shelby as a British Army sapper during World War I, and he saved Shelby's life by stabbing a German tunneler in the back. However, he suffered from severe PTSD after the war's end, often culminating in violent episodes such as trashing much of The Garrison Pub and stabbing the Italian restauranteur Adalfredo Bucciero dead after he confronted Owen with a knife (which Owen mistook for a German bayonet). Adalfredo's brothers Gomberto and Romualdo Bucciero demanded that Owen's friend Tommy Shelby shoot him in front of them as recompense for their brother's death, and Shelby brought Owen to a canal and shot him in the back of the head with a sheep brain-filled bullet. The brothers then left, satisfied with what they thought was Owen's death, but Owen survived with a minor injury; Shelby secretly arranged for Owen to escape to London. Owen worked as a spy for the Peaky Blinders in London, and his false gravesite was used to store stolen machine guns. Owen found out that the IRA blamed Shelby for the murder of one of their members, but Shelby told him that the Blinders were not at fault, and had Owen inform the IRA of his innocence. Later, Owen took part in the gunfight with Billy Kimber's men, and he jumped between Kimber and Shelby as Kimber shot his gun, and Owen died taking the bullet for Shelby.
