Damascus Eyalet was an administrative district of the Ottoman Empire that existed from 1517 to 1865, preceding the Syria Vilayet and the Mutasarrifate of Jerusalem. The eyalet was created in the aftermath of the Ottoman conquest of Syria from the Mamelukes, and Mameluke traitor Janbirdi al-Ghazali was the first governor of the eyalet. The region covered much of what is now Syria, Palestine, Jordan, and Israel, and Damascus served as the capital. In 1865, an administrative reform split the region into the Syria Vilayet and the Mutasarrifate of Jerusalem.
