Dalmatia is one of the four historical regions of Croatia, along with Croatia Proper, Istria, and Slavonia. Dalmatia is a narrow belt along the Adriatic Sea coastline of Croatia, and one thousand islands are lined along the shore. The region was named for the Dalmatae, a tribe of Illyrians that inhabited the region at the time of the Roman Empire, and from 1420 to 1797 the region was ruled by the Republic of Venice after its conquest from the Kingdom of Hungary. From 1815 to 1918, the region was a province of Austria, but it became a part of Yugoslavia in 1918 and remained so until the independence of Croatia in 1995. In 2011, the region had a population of 852,068.
