Shafi's death
Daif Shafi was a Pashtun Afghan, and became a commander of the rebel Mujahideen, a group of Afghan and foreign Muslim fighters whose goal was to resist the modernization of Afghanistan as well as the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan and the Soviet Union.
In 1988, during the Soviet Operation Magistral, he led a large band of Mujahideen troops to pursue the last remnants of The Ninth Company, elite paratroopers who had taken heavy losses defending Khost. He pursued them to Hill 3234, where he found an officer carrying a wounded man. Shafi followed the officer to the top of the cliff, and drew a knife to finish them. However, hidden Soviet troops emerged from cover and he was shot in the chest with an AK-47.
