The Dagestan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic was an autonomous republic of the Russian SFSR that existed from 1921 to 1991, with Makhachkala serving as its capital. Dagestan was home to more than thirty indigenous North Caucasian ethnic groups, and the Russian language was used as the lingua franca. In 1991, the socialist republic became the new "Republic of Dagestan", a federal subject of the Russian Federation.
