D.M. Jayaratne

Dissanayaka Mudiyanselage Jayaratne (4 June 1931 – 19 November 2019) was Prime Minister of Sri Lanka from 21 April 2010 to 9 January 2015, succeeding Ratnasiri Wickremanayake and preceding Ranil Wickremesinghe. He was a member of the social democratic Sri Lanka Freedom Party.

Biography[]

Dissanayaka Mudiyanselage Jayaratne was born in Colombo, Sri Lanka on 4 June 1931, and he worked as a teacher at Doluwa Maha Vidyalaya before joining the Sri Lanka Freedom Party in 1951. He served as Postmaster of Doluwa from 1960 to 1962 and entered Parliament following the 1970 general election, serving until the SLFP electoral disaster of 1977; he returned in 1989. After the United People's Freedom Alliance won the 2010 general election, Jayaratne became the next Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, and he served until 2015. He died in 2019 at the age of 88.
