Dail Eireann

The Dail Eireann in session

The Dáil Éireann (pronounced dawl air-ahn), meaning Assembly of Ireland in Irish, is the lower house of the Oireachtas of Ireland, consisting of 158 seats. Since 1922, the Dáil Éireann has met at the Leinster House in Dublin, and its members are elected every five years under a system of proportional representation. The first incarnation convened from 1919 to 1921 during the Irish War of Independence, with Eamon de Valera serving as Ceann Comhairle (Chairman) for much of the war. The Dáil Éireann has the power to pass any law it wishes and can nominate and remove the Taoiseach (Prime Minister). Its members are known as Teachtaí Dála (Teachta Dála or "TD", singular).
