Biography[]

Cyrille Achee was born in Eunice, Acadia Parish, Louisiana to a family of Cajuns, and he was raised in a devout, French-speaking Catholic home. Achee was very conservative when it came to religion, and he began his political career as a preacher during the Second Great Awakening. Achee was an ordained minister and reverend when he first ran for the US House of Representatives in 1866, running as a member of the Southern Democrats. Achee was popular among his parishioners, and he was elected as a representative of Louisiana with the US Democratic Party. In 1870, he attempted to run for Governor of Louisiana, but he was defeated in the primary elections by fellow congressman Conrad Mouton. Achee remained in the House as a representative until 1878, when he retired from politics to return to the clergy. He died of eating raw shrimp in 1889.
