Lord Cutler Beckett (1689-1729) was Governor of the British East India Company from 1728 to 1729. He was devoted to hunting down Pirates who attacked his merchant vessels, and was killed when his ship HMS Endeavour was sunken.

Biography[]

Cutler Beckett was born in Somerset, England in 1689 to a prosperous merchant family. After a fight with his father, he joined the British East India Company and became the Director of West African Imports and Exports for the company. Beckett was set back when his subordinate Jack Sparrow became a pirate and took HMS Wicked Wench for his own, losing his chance to become a knight; however, more than a decade later, he became a lord and governor of the EIC.

Beckett attempted to eradicate the pirates who troubled his merchant ships in the 1720s, declaring war on the Brethren Court. He assembled a large fleet, but when his one ship met with the Black Pearl, Jack Sparrow's ship, they engaged in a one-on-one duel off the coast of Shipwreck Island. Unexpectedly, the Flying Dutchman struck out of nowhere, and his ship HMS Endeavour was caught in between the two. The ship was destroyed, and all hands were lost. Beckett was killed, his body floating above the standard of the Company before sinking below the depths.
