Culpeper VA 3

Culpeper is the county seat of Culpeper County, Virginia. The area was originially inhabited by the Manahoac Indians, and the town of Culpeper was founded in 1749, surveyed by George Washington, and named for Thomas Colepeper, 2nd Baron Colepeper. The Culpeper Minutemen militia fought in the American Revolutionary War, organizing at Clayton's Old Field. In 1795, the town became home a post office, and it served as a major crossroads during the American Civil War; the Battle of Cedar Mountain, Battle of Kelly's Ford, and Battle of Brandy Station were fought near the town. Culpeper evolved into a commuter suburb of Washington DC and Northern Virginia during the 1980s, and, in 2014, the town's historic train depot became home to the county museum. In 2020, Culpeper had a population of 20,062 people, and, from 2012 onward, the county's voters tended to vote Republican over Democrat by an approximately 60% to 40% margin.
