Cuitlahuac (1485-1520) was Emperor of the Aztec Empire in 1520, succeeding Moctezuma II and preceding Cuauhtemoc. He died of natural causes just 60 days into his reign, which occurred during the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire.
Biography[]
Cuitlahuac was the eleventh son of Axayacatl and the younger brother of Moctezuma II, from whom he inherited the throne of the Aztec Empire in 1520. Cuitlahuac, unlike his brother, was warlike and favored confrontation with the Spanish in the aftermath of the Massacre in the Great Temple, commanding the Aztec revolt during the "Night of Sorrows". He died sixty days into his reign of smallpox, and his wife/niece, Isabel Moctezuma, would later become Hernan Cortes' mistress.
