Crete is the largest and most populous of the Greek islands, with Heraklion serving as its capital. The island was home to the Minoans, the first known civilization in Europe, and it became an important center of Mediterranean trade during the periods of antiquity and the Middle Ages. In 2011, Crete had a population of 623,065 people.
