The County of Maine was a historical province of the Kingdom of France, located to the south of Normandy and east of Brittany in northern France. Maine was a region constantly struck by war, as it was raided by Normans/Vikings and Bretons in the early Middle Ages and later the Kingdom of England in the later Middle Ages. Maine was conquered in the early 13th century by Philip II of France, and its brief recapture at the Battle of Verneuil in 1424 during the Hundred Years' War was negated by the war's end. During the French Revolution, Maine was divided into Mayenne and Sarthe, ending the historical county.
