Cornelius Cole (17 September 1822-3 November 1924) was a member of the US House of Representatives (R-CA) from 4 March 1863 to 3 March 1865 (succeeding Timothy Guy Phelps) and a US Senator from 4 March 1867 to 3 March 1873 (succeeding James A. McDougall and preceding Aaron A. Sargent).
Biography[]
Cornelius Cole was born in Lodi, Seneca County, New York in 1822, and he became a lawyer in 1847. He later moved to California and practiced law in San Francisco, in Sacramento, and in Los Angeles, and, in 1856, he co-founded the California Republican Party. He served as Sacramento County district attorney in 1858, moved to Santa Cruz in 1862, served in the US House of Representatives from 1863 to 1865, and in the US Senate from 1867 to 1873. He died in Hollywood in 1924 at the age of 102.
