Cora Crawley, Countess of Grantham

Cora Crawley, Countess of Grantham (born 1868) was an American heiress and the wife of Robert Crawley, 7th Earl of Grantham.

Biography[]

Cora Levinson was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1868, the only daughter of dry goods multi-millionaire Isidore Levinson and his wife Martha Levinson. She was brought to London in 1888 for her first season by her socially ambitious mother, who wished her to marry a member of the British nobility. She met Robert Crawley, Viscount Downton, the future Earl of Grantham. She became engaged to him and married on 16 February 1890, and she entailed her fortune to the family estate in Yorkshire to prevent it from going bankrupt. Robert eventually fell in love with her, and she became Countess of Grantham on her father-in-law's death. She gave birth to daughters Mary, Edith, and Sybil, while miscarrying a son. In order to provide an heir to the family, the Count and Countess betrothed Mary to the heir Patrick Crawley, only for Patrick to die in the sinking of the RMS Titanic in 1912. In 1921, Mary and Matthew Crawley produced an heir, George Crawley, who became heir to his grandfather's title after Matthew's death in a car crash.
