Coppergate Market

Coppergate Market was a medieval market located on Coppergate in the city center of York, Yorkshire, England. The street lay outside the city walls of the Roman city, and it was used for glass-making during the Roman era. It was later reoccupied by the Danes of Jorvik in the 9th century AD, and, during the early 12th century, it acquired its name from its coopers. The street was widened in 1900, leading to the replacement of most medieval buildings, and, following the demolition of a cinema and confectionary factory in 1976, major Viking remains were found at the site. In 1984, the Coppergate Shopping Center was founded, continuing the legacy of the old market.
