Copacabana farm raid

Search Bloc troops breaching the farm

The Copacabana farm raid occurred on 25 January 1991 when the Search Bloc elite police unit under Colonel Horacio Carrillo raided a farm near Copacabana, Antioquia, Colombia with the goal of rescuing hostages taken by Pablo Escobar and the Medellin Cartel. The soldiers managed to kill all of the hostage-takers, but they accidentally killed journalist Diana Turbay, who was hidden in a cupboard and hit with two bullets by accident. The successful raid was ironically one of Escobar's greatest victories, as it was unsanctioned by Turbay's father, the former president Julio Cesar Turbay Ayala. The tragic mistake forced President Cesar Gaviria to allow Escobar to stay in "a prison" of his own choosing; Escobar ultimately stayed in "La Catedral",  a castle that he built which would be guarded by his own men.
