The Constitution of the Year III was the French constitution that was adopted by the National Convention on 22 August 1795, creating the French Directory to replace the Committee of Public Safety. The constitution was designed by the conservative Thermidorians, who established a five-man oligarchy and a bicameral legislature, namely the Council of Ancients and the Council of Five Hundred.
