Constantius III

Constantius III (381-2 September 421) was co-Emperor of the Western Roman Empire with Honorius from 8 February to 2 September 421.

Biography[]

Flavius Constantius was born in Naissus, Moesia (present-day Nis, Serbia) in 381 to a Romano-Illyrian family. He served as a general under the Western Roman emperor Honorius and rose to the rank of Magister militum by 411, when he was sent to put down the revolt of Flavius Claudius Constantinus in Roman Britain and Gaul. Constantius captured him and had him beheaded for treason, reneging on his promise to grant him clemency. In 416, Constantius then campaigned against the Visigoths in northern Hispania, forcing King Wallia to sue for peace. By 420, Constantius had reconquered much of Hispania and Roman Gaul. Constantius - who had served as consul in 414, 417, and 420 - married Honorius' sister Galla Placidia and served as co-emperor for seven months in 421 before dying in Ravenna.
