Constantine Phipps, 1st Marquess of Normanby

Constantine Phipps, 1st Marquess of Normanby (15 May 1797 – 28 July 1863) was the Whig MP for Scarborough from 1818 to 1820, for Higham Ferrers from 1822 to 1826, and for Malton from 1826 to 1830; he also served as Governor of Jamaica from 1832 to 1834, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland from 1835 to 1839, Secretary of State for War and the Colonies in 1839, and Home Secretary from 1839 to 1841.

Biography[]

Constantine Phipps was the son of Henry Phipps, 1st Earl of Mulgrave, and he initially followed in his father's footsteps as the Tory MP for Scarborough in 1818. However, he defected to the Whigs in 1819, and he became known as a prominent Whig spokesman and novelist. In addition to governing Jamaica from 1832 to 1834 and Ireland from 1835 to 1839, he served as ambassador to France from 1846 to 1852 and Florence from 1854 to 1858. He died in 1863.
