Constantine I of Scotland

Constantine I of Scotland (849-877) was the king of Scotland from 862 to 877, succeeding Donald I of Scotland and preceding Aed of Scotland.

Biography[]

Constantine was born in 849 to Kenneth I of Scotland, and he was from the House of MacAlpin, a dynasty of Catholic Scots. Constantine succeeded his uncle Domnall I of Scotland as king of Scotland on his death in 862, becoming the third king of a united Scotland. Constantine's reign was dominated by raids and invasions by the Vikings, and he fought against the armies of Ivar the Boneless and Olaf the White. Constantine killed and defeated the army of Olaf in 871, and Ivar died in 873. In 875 his army of Picts was slaughtered at Dollar, and in 877 he fought the Vikings again at Fife Ness. Constantie was captured and beheaded on a Fife beach by the Norse.
