Constantin Eruli (died 1500) was the Bishop of Spoleto from 1474 to 1500, succeeding Berardo Eroli and preceding Francesco Erulli.
Biography[]
Constantin Eruli was appointed Bishop of Narni by Pope Pius II in 1462, Bishop of Todi by Pope Sixtus IV in 1472, and Bishop of Spoleto in 1474 by Pope Sixtus. During the papacy of Pope Alexander VI in the 1490s, Spoleto did not pay any tithes to Rome, and Eruli refused to head to Rome when Alexander summoned him; he believed that, since the Papal States did not protect Spoleto during the Italian War of 1494-98, Spoleto did not owe it to Rome to pay the tithe. Alexander proceeded to have Rodrigo Borgia Lanzol's Papal soldiers raid his palace as he slept, chain him up, and bring him to Rome on a cart. Eruli told Pope Alexander that the Papal States would rebel against the Pope once they found out how he was treated, but Pope Alexander said that Eruli would be chained to a chair for the rest of his days at the Terra Nuova prison, being displayed so that the public would be forced to pay taxes. Pope Alexander then asked him again if he wanted to pay the Denarii Sancti Petri, and despite Eruli saying that he would pay, Pope Alexander said that he was too late. Eruli was imprisoned at Terra Nuova prison until the end of his days in 1500, and the Pope appointed Lucrezia Borgia as Governor of Spoleto.
