Constance of Arles

Constance of Arles (986-28 July 1032) was Queen Consort of the Franks from 1001 to 1031 with King Robert II of France.

Biography[]

Constance was the daughter of William I of Provence and Adelaide-Blanche of Anjou, and she married King Robert II of France in 1001 after he divorced his second wife, Bertha of Burgundy. In 1010, Robert headed to Rome, seeking to annul his marriage to Constance and remarry Bertha, but Pope Sergius IV refused the renewal of his old incestuous marriage, and Robert appreciated Constance more. In 1025, she rebuked her son Hugh Magnus when he began a rebellion against King Robert, and he died at the age of eighteen after reconciling with his parents. Robert favored his son Henry as heir to the throne, while Constance favored Robert; Henry was crowned in 1027, against Constance's wishes. She died in 1032, a year after her late husband.
