The Conservative Party of Nicaragua was a conservative political party in Nicaragua, founded in 1838. The party was founded by members of the elite of Granada, and it fought the Liberal Party of Nicaragua in a constant civil war from the 1840s to 1850s. In 1857, the Conservatives won, holding power for 35 years. In 1893, the Conservative Party split, and the Liberals made a successful rebellion. The Conservatives returned to power in 1910 following the intervention of American troops, and it remained in power until another liberal rebellion in 1926. Factions of the party, along with factions of the Liberal Party, helped Anastasio Somoza Garcia to gain power. Most conservatives opposed the regime, and they finished runner-up behind the Sandinistas in 1984. During the 1990s, it became the third-largest party in the country, but far smaller than both the Sandinistas and the Constitutionalist Liberal Party. By the 2010s, it was barely represented in the government.
