The Conservative Party of Mexico was a conservative political party that existed in Mexico from 1849 to 1867. The party was the most powerful of the conservative factions in Mexican politics during its existence, while the Moderate Liberal Party of Mexico would advocate a more centrist form of conservatism. The Conservatives were aggressive nationalists, and they also supported monarchism. Key Conservative Party policies were having a protected economy, implementing state Catholicism, rejecting the right of immigrants to gain citizenship, pursuing an aggressive foreign policy, maintaining the criollo (white) control over the government, and ensuring that landowners and aristocrats ruled the country. In 1861, 63% of the upper house was controlled by the conservatives, although the Liberal Party of Mexico would control politics instead. The party collapsed in 1867 after the downfall of Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico and his conservative regime.
