The Conservative Party of Japan, also called the Nihon Hoshutō, is an alt-right political party in Japan, founded in 2023 by right-wing political commentator Naoki Hyakuta. Hyakuta and journalist Kaori Arimoto founded the party in response to the passage of the LGBT Understanding Promotion Act, which opened the way for anti-discrimination legislation to protect gay rights. The Hoshutō quickly established a large online presence among the netto-uyoku (the online alt-right), and it won most of its support from conservatives disappointed with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida's leniency on gay rights, immigration, and foreign policy; males in their 50s and 60s; and former Sanseito and Democratic Party for the People voters. The party asserted itself as a more right-wing alternative to the Liberal Democratic Party and Nippon Ishin no Kai, and it opposed same-sex marriage, LGBT-related education, immigration, and the overpaying of politicians while supporting expanded sanctions against North Korea, stronger relations with Taiwan, the deportation of refugees who had been denied asylum, and creating a separate health insurance system for foreign residents. Hyakuta and Arimoto joked about wanting to sever relations with South Korea and go to war in a 30 October 2023 live stream, also calling Koreans "human scum"; Hyakuta also denied the Rape of Nanking and claimed that Japan "liberated" Southeast Asia during World War II.
