Congress of Aix-la-Chapelle

A political cartoon about the congress

The Congress of Aix-la-Chapelle was held in the autumn of 1818 by the members of the Quadruple Alliance. The alliance decided that France, which had paid its indemnity, should be freed of occupation, and France once more became a great power. Alexander I of Russia proposed that the great powers should support the existing governments and frontiers of Europe, but the British foreign secretary Lord Castlereagh rejected the proposal, the first break in the accord among the alliance.
