The Congress for the Republic (CPR) was a social democratic and secularist political party in Tunisia which existed from 25 July 2001 to 2 January 2017. It was founded in 2001 with the goal of creating a republican government which provided freedom of speech, freedom of association, and free and honest elections. It also called for a new constitution, checks and balances, human rights, gender equality, national self-determination, and cooperation with the European Union. In 2002, President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali banned the CPR, but, following Ben Ali's ouster in January 2011, the Congress for the Republic was legalized. In 2017, the party merged into al-Irada.
