The Confederate States Army was the military ground force of the Confederate States of America from 28 February 1861 to 26 May 1865. The CSA fought in the American Civil War against the Union, being established as a volunteer army two months before the start of the conflict. As many as 1,500,000 men served in the CSA during the civil war, and the army consisted of volunteer soldiers (nicknamed "butternuts" for their ragged brown uniforms) and regular troops who dressed in gray. The CSA surrendered at the end of the war in 1865, with some of the last Confederate troops fleeing to Mexico to aid France in their war against the Mexicans in the French Intervention.
