Coney Island is a peninsular residential neighborhood and beach in southern Brooklyn, New York City, connected to Long Island by land filling. The island was named for the abundance of wild rabbits on the island - conyn is the Dutch word for rabbit. Coney Island was once home to amusement parks and a seaside resort, but the parks fell into neglect after World War II, and they were replaced by the MCU Park baseball stadium, home to the Brooklyn Cyclones minor league team. Coney Island was home to 24,711 people in 2010.
