Nobles agreeing to a compromise
The Compromise of Nobles occurred on 5 April 1566 when members of the lesser nobility of the Spanish Netherlands petitioned for the moderation of laws against Protestant heresy in the region. The nobles united in opposition to the Spanish government's strict laws against freedom of religion and against their taxation, and the refusal of the Spanish to accept Calvinism led to the iconoclast revolt of 1567, the start of the Dutch Revolt.
