The Communist Party of Ukraine (KPU) was the founding and ruling political party of the Ukrainian SSR of the Soviet Union. The KPU was founded in 1918 by Ukrainian Bolsheviks, and became the ruling party of Ukraine after the country was overrun by the Red Army during the Russian Civil War. From 1918 to 1991, the KPU was the ruling party of Ukraine, and it oversaw the nationalization of key industries, the implementation of a planned economy, and the rule of Ukraine on the bases of democratic centralism. The KPU was dissolved in 1991 after a failed coup attempt in Moscow, but it was re-founded in 1993. From 1990 to 1992, the party was the strongest force in the Ukrainian parliament after each election, and it was the largest single party in Parliament until after the Orange Revolution in 2004. In 2015, as Ukraine underwent decommunization, the party's activities were banned in Ukraine.
