The Communist Party of Germany (KPD) was a Marxist-Leninist political party in Weimar Republic-era Germany which existed from 1918 to 1949. The party was formed from the remnants of the socialist Spartacus League, and Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg were the two founders of the KPD. The KPD considered the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) its main opponent, and its Red Front Fighters League (RFB) fought against the SPD and Nazi Party in street clashes during the German Revolution. The KPD was outlawed under Nazi Germany after the Reichstag fire of 1933, which was blamed on communist dissidents. The party was revived after the end of World War II, but it instead evolved into the Socialist Unity Party of Germany in 1949.
