The Communist Party of Finland (SKP) is a communist political party in Finland that was active from 29 August 1918 to 1992 and from 1994 onwards. The party was founded by Finnish Socialist Workers' Republic exiles in Moscow, USSR after the communists' defeat in the Finnish Civil War, and it joined the Comintern. From 1918 to 1944, the party was banned by the Finnish government, but it would later become a legal party. While the SKP never held control of the government, it often held cabinet positions, and the SKP rivaled the fellow leftist party, the Social Democratic Party of Finland, for control of trade unions and for the people's support. In 1992, the party was dissolved after the end of the Cold War, but it was re-founded in 1994 and registered in 1997.
