The Communist League was an international socialist political party that existed from 1847 to 1852, led by Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, and Karl Schapper. The party was created in 1847 when, at the initiative of Engels, the members of the Christian communist League of the Just replaced their motto "All men are brothers" with "Workers of all countries, unite!" (adopting a more bellicose attitude towards the bourgeoisie) and renamed the league to the "Communist League". The Communist League drew inspiration from the left-wing of the Jacobin Club and its alliance of artisans, journeymen, and the urban unemployed, and the Communist League was based in London from 1847 to 1848 and from Cologne from 1848 until 1852, when several o fits leaders were imprisoned. In 1864, the First International was founded to unite the remnants of the Communist League with anarchist, socialist, and trade union groups advocating for class struggle.
