Commercial Road is a street in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets in the East End. The 1.9-mile-long road runs from Gardiner's Corner through Stepney to the junction with Burdett Road in Limehouse, at which point the route splits into the East India Dock Road and the West India Dock Road. Commercial Road was constructed from 1802 to 1806 as a direct route to link dock traffic between the West India Docks and East India Docks. Commercial Road became a public road in the 1860s and road tolls were abolished, and, in 1870, the Metropolitan Board of Works extended the street westwards to Gardiner's Corner, where it met Whitechapel High Street and Commercial Street. After much of the surrounding area was destroyed during the Blitz, Commercial Road was redeveloped, with numerous side streets being cleared of slums and replaced by modern housing.
