Columbus W. Freres (1853-1898) was an American lawman who served as a deputy in the Tumbleweed Sheriff's Department in the Arizona Territory during the Wild West. In 1898, the Arizona Kid rode into town, angered at the Sheriff's Department's refusal to pay for his takedown of two waned outlaws; he intended to shoot the first lawman he saw. When Arizona came across Freres, he pulled out his pistol and shot him in the face, killing Freres and resulting in a shootout.
