Colter was a mining town located in Big Horn County, Wyoming, located at the junction of Big Horn Lake and Deer Creek (north of present-day Kane). Named for John Colter, the "first mountain man", the town was abandoned during the great storm of 1884, and it was thereafter taken over by Flaco Hernandez's gang, and later by the O'Driscoll Boys by 1899. It was the site of a major shootout between the Van der Linde Gang and the O'Driscolls that same year.
