Flag of Colorado

Colorado is a state in the United States located along the Rockies in the West. Colorado was named for the Colorado River by travelers from Spain; its name means "reddish" in Spanish, referring to the ruddy slit carried from the valley. It was settled on 28 February 1861 as a territory, and it was the location of the "Colorado War" from 1863-1865, in which the American settlers succeeded in ousting the Cheyenne and Dakota Native Americans from the territory. On 1 August 1876, Colorado was admitted to the union as the 38th state, and it was nicknamed "the Centennial State" for being established 100 years after the United States itself. In 2015, Colorado had a population of 5,456,574 people, and its capital is Denver.
