Colegio Mayor de San Bartolome

The Colegio Mayor de San Bartolomé is a private Catholic K-12 school in Bogota, Colombia that was established in 1604. The school was established by Archbishop Bartolome Lobo Guerrero and the Jesuits, and it is the oldest Colombian school in continuous operation. After the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1767, the school passed into the hnads of the government, and its library became a founding part of the National Library of Colombia. In 1830, students from the academy assaulted and seized the offices of the Supreme Court in order to force a public trial of Simon Bolivar, and they slashed with bayonets and hurled down from the balcony his life-size portrait. In 1844, the Jesuits returned and took charge of the seminary, but they were expelled by Jose Hilario Lopez in 1850 and returned in 1857 under Mariano Ospina Rodriguez. In 1861, Tomas Cipriano de Mosquera once again expelled the Jesuits, and itw as nationalized in 1866. The Jesuits returned in 1882 under Rafael Núñez, and the school was put under their direction for a final time in 1887. By 2016, the school had approximately 1,500 students.
