
Coenred of Mercia (670-716) was King of Mercia from 704 to 709, succeeding Aethelred and preceding Ceolred.
Biography[]
Coenred was born in 670, the son of King Wulfhere of Mercia. He succeeded his uncle Aethelred of Mercia as King of Mercia in 704, and he faced attacks from the Welsh on his western borders. In 709, he abdicated in order to embark on a pilgrimage to Rome, where he remained as a monk until his death in 716.
