Cockacoeske

Cockacoeske (1640-1686) was chieftess of the Pamunkey from 1656 to 1686, succeeding Totopotomoi and preceding Queen Betty. Born in Pamunkey Neck, she married the Pamunkey chieftain Totopotomoi and inherited the leadership of the tribe after her husband's death at the Battle of Bloody Run, as she was a descendant of the Powhatan chief Opechancanough. She reigned for thirty years, and she joined forces with Governor William Berkeley against Bacon's Rebellion. Cockacoeske and her tribe were forced to flee into Dragon Swamp by Nathaniel Bacon's rebels before Bacon's death from disease caused the rebellion to fizzle out. She and her son John West signed the Treaty of Middle Plantation with the Colony of Virginia on 29 May 1677, with the English agreeing to protect the Pamunkey from hostile Indians and grant them a small reservation in exchange for their cession of their ancestral land to the colonists.
