Clyde LaVerne Herring (3 May 1879-15 September 1945) was the Democratic Governor of Iowa from 12 January 1933 to 14 January 1937 (succeeding Dan W. Turner and preceding Nelson G. Kraschel) and a US Senator from Iowa from 15 January 1937 to 3 January 1943 (succeeding L.J. Dickinson and preceding George A. Wilson).

Biography[]

Clyde LaVerne Herring was born in Jackson, Michigan in 1879, and he was raised in Detroit, Michigan before serving in the US Army during the Spanish-American War. After the war, he worked as a rancher in Colorado Springs before becoming a farmer in Massena, Iowa. He served with the Iowa National Guard on the Mexican border during the Border War, and he went on to win election as Governor in 1932, becoming the second Democratic governor of Iowa since 1854. He opposed the airing of "War of the Worlds" in 1938, and he failed in his quest to be Franklin D. Roosevelt's 1940 vice-presidential candidate. He also served in the US Senate from 1937 to 1943, and he served as FDR's assistant administrator of the Office of Price Administration during World War II. He died in Washington DC in 1945.
