Clyde Harold Smith (9 June 1876 – 8 April 1940) was a member of the US House of Representatives from Maine's 2nd district (R) from 3 January 1937 to 8 April 1940, succeeding Edward C. Moran, Jr. and preceding his wife Margaret Chase Smith.
Biography[]
Clyde Harold Smith was born on a farm near Harmony, Maine on 9 June 1876, and he became a teacher before serving in the State House of Representatives from 1899 to 1903 and from 1919 to 1923. He opened his own retail clothing and hardware business, and he was Hartland's superintendent of schools from 1903 to 1906. From 1905 to 1909, he was Sheriff of Somerset County after moving to Skowhegan, and he served in the State Senate from 1923 to 1929. Smith was an ardent opponent of the Ku Klux Klan during his time in office. From 1937 to 1940, he served in the US House of Representatives as a Republican Party member, and he supported Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal policies. Smith died of a heart attack in Washington DC on 8 April 1940, and his wife Margaret Chase Smith succeeded him.
