Clifton R. Breckinridge

Clifton Rodes Breckinridge (22 November 1846-3 December 1932) was a member of the US House of Representatives (D-AR AL) from 4 March 1883 to 3 March 1885 and from AR-2 from 4 March 1885 to 5 September 1890 (succeeding James K. Jones and preceding John M. Clayton) and from 4 November 1890 to 14 August 1894 (succeeding Clayton and preceding John S. Little).

Biography[]

Clifton Rodes Breckinridge was born in Lexington, Kentucky in 1846, the son of John C. Breckinridge. He served in the Confederate States Navy during the American Civil War before becoming a cotton planter in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. He served on the city council before serving in the US House of Representatives from 1883 to 1894 and as Minister to Russia from 1894 to 1897, dealing with the problems of trade and immigration. In 1900, he served on the Dawes Commission to the Indian tribes, and he later founded a trust company in Fort Smith and died in Wendover, Kentucky in 1932.
