The Civil Rights Act of 1968 was a landmark piece of legislation that was passed by the US government on 11 April 1968, providing for equal housing opportunities for all Americans, as well as forbidding intimidation, interference, and violence based on hatred. The act was first introduced by New York congressman Emanuel Celler of the US Democratic Party on 7 January 1967, and the act was ratified over a year later.
