The Cispadane Republic (1797) was a tributary state of the First French Republic. In a bid to unify the surrounding provinces, Napoleon Bonaparte declared that the Cispadane Republic was to be formed - an independent Italian state answerable to and under the protection of the French Republic. This strengthened France's influence in the region and provided them with essential resources with which to launch further offensives into Austrian territory. It was united with the Cisalpine Republic later in 1797.
