The Cisalpine Republic (1797-1802) was a French satellite state established in northern Italy. Now that Transpadania and Cispadania were liberated from unwanted foreign influence, France decreed that they be united into a single Italian state under the protection of France. As well as allowing to maintain a firm control over the region, fervent Italian troops were rallied; a Lombardy Legion to fight for the good republic.
