Cirilo Antonio Rivarola

Cirilo Antonio Rivarola Acosta (1836-31 December 1878) was a member of the Paraguayan Triumvirate from 15 August 1869 to 31 August 1870 (succeeding Francisco Solano Lopez and preceding Facundo Machain) and President of Paraguay from 1 September 1870 to 18 December 1871 (succeeding Machain and preceding Salvador Jovellanos).

Biography[]

Cirilo Antonio Rivarola Acosta was born in Eusebio Ayala, Paraguay in 1836, and he served in the Paraguayan Army during the Paraguayan War before being arrested by the government in 1869. He fled and became a spy for the Allies, after which Brazil named him one of the triumvirs who ruled an Allied occupation government. In 1870, he and the Brazilians deposed President Facundo Machain 12 hours into his term and served as President until he was forced to resign in December 1871 amid a constitutional crisis triggered by the ambitious Juan Bautista Gill. Over the next several years, Rivarola led several Argentine-backed rebellions in southern Paraguay, but he was assassinated in 1878 while on his way to meet with President Candido Bareiro at the presidential palace, just 100 meters from where his death occurred.
