Cincinnati is a city in the US state of Ohio that serves as the county seat of Hamilton County; it is the third-largest city in the state, having a metro area population of 2,137,406 people in 2010. The city was settled in 1788 at the confluence of the Licking and Ohio Rivers, the first major American city to be founded after the American Revolutionary War; it was named for the "Society of the Cincinnati", a society of Revolutionary War veterans. During the 19th century, it became a boomtown in the heart of the country, and it was the sixth-largest city in the USA between 1840 and 1860. Cincinnati became home to a significant German immigrant population, but its growth was halted due to westward migration and the advent of railroads instead of steamboats. However, it currently has the fastest-growing economy in the Midwest, and the unemployment rate is a mere 4.3%.
